Wilhelm Zehle

German composer and musician born in 1876.

He began his music studies at the School of Music in Magdeburg, 19 years old in 1895. After completing his studies he joined a military band in Wilhelmshaven, The Royal Mobile 2nd Sea Batallion. Where he played the trumpet.

In 1900 the band was ordered to china during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. When conductor fell ill and couldn’t travel Zehle took his place. The band returned to Wilhelmshaven and Germany in 1901 and Zehle returned to playing the trumpet.

He left the military in 1903 to join the financial division of the Wilhelmshaven port authority. After 13 years at the port authority he retired to Ahlhorn near Oldenburg, where he resided until his death in 1956.

At the start of the 20th century Hawkes & Son sponsored a series of competitions for march composers, which Wilhelm Zehle won four times: 1900: Viscount Nelson 1901: Army and Marine 1906: Wellington 1908: Trafalgar
