The Thin Red Line – Original painting by Robert Gibb. The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders facing Russian cavalry at the Battle of Balaklava 1854.

The march is named after Alford’s regiment’s nickname, which it acquired during the Crimean War, when the “thin red line” of British soldiers held back the Russian advance.

The Thin Red Line wasn’t published, or available to other bands until 1925.
