Samuel Barber was born at West Chester, Pennsylvania, on March 9, 1910. He began piano lessons at the age of six, and his first music was composed at age seven. He graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1932. From 1931 to 1933, he taught piano at Curtis, but since then he has earned his living mainly from composing.

Among his awards are the American Prix de Rome (1935) and two Pulitzer Prizes (1935, 1936). He is one of the most important American composers, and among his most famous works are the ballet Medea, A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map, The School for Scandal Overture, Three Essays for Orchestra, Adagio for Strings, two symphonies, and numerous songs. He composed Commando March for band in 1943 while serving in the U.S. Army Air Force.
