Sam Hjalmar Rydberg was born in Nyköping in 1885. He spent his boyhood years in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Sodertalje. In Sodertalje, he learned to play trumpet, E-flat cornet, and cello.

In 1898 he joined he joined the swedish army as drummer in the “Kungl. Södermanlands Regemente” located in Strängnäs. Later he also learned to play the trumpet and chello.

In 1906 he transferred to the band of the Kungliga Svea Ingeniörkår (The Royal Engineers) in Stockholm, where he played trumpet. Rydberg studied at the Royal College of Music with Karl Lindhe and Ernst Ellberg. In 1928 he became their director of music, a position he held until 1935, when he retired from the army.

Rydberg remained active for many years as a music teacher at a public school, as an arranger of music for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation and as a musician in various orchestras. His compositions include novelties, dance music, film music, an estimated 70 marches, and one overture. Sam Rydberg died in Stockholm in 1956.
