1873 - May 1, 1940
James M. Fulton was born in 1873 in Washington, Pennsylvania. At the age of eight, he studied cornet and violin and, by the age of 12, he was soloist on the violin, cornet, euphonium, and tuba. By the time he was 16, he was playing violin in a theater orchestra in Washington, subsequently becoming the leader.
For the next year, he played in a 12-piece band of the Waite Dramatic Company and was soon placed in charge of the ensemble, a position he held for 12 years. Fulton then spent nine years performing at the Hotel Rudolf in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Following that engagement, he founded Fulton's American Band in Waterbury, Connecticut. While in Waterbury, he also formed a string quartet, conducted a local symphony orchestra, and organized his own music publishing company. In 1914, he became leader of the Waltham Watch Company Band in Boston. A prominent band leader, composer, teacher, and arranger of music for band and orchestra, Fulton knew Victor Herbert well and arranged several of Herbert's works for band. Fulton died on May 1, 1940, in Belmont, Massachusetts.
