Edwin Eugene Bagley

Edwin Eugene Bagley was born in Craftsbury, Vermont on May 29, 1857. When he was nine, he joined Leavitt’s Bellringers, as a vocalist and comedian. Leavitt’s Bellringers was a company of entertainers that toured many of the larger cities of the United States. Later he started playing the cornet and toured with the Swiss Bellringers for six years, after which time he joined Blaisdell’s Orchestra of Concord, New Hampshire.
In 1880, he came to Boston as solo cornetist at the Park Theatre. For nine years he traveled with the Bostonians, a Boston opera company. While with this company, he changed from cornet to trombone. He also played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Germania Band of Boston.
In 1905, he composed his most famous march National Emblem.
On January 29, 1922 E. E. Bagley died at the Elliot Community Hospital in Keene, New Hampshire after a few weeks of illness, and is buried in Keene. The Victorian Bandstand in Keene was renamed in his honor.
