Charles Lloyd Barnhouse was born March 20, 1865, in Grafton West Virginia.

At the age of 14 he quit school to work. When he was 16 he was elected leader of the Grafton town. He wanted to see the world and didn’t hold the position for long. He traveled with various show bands, first as a cornetist and later as a bandleader. During this time he also startedto compose.

In 1888 his travels brought him to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where he decided to open his own music publishing business.

In 1892 Barnhouse settled permanently in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Charles Lloyd Barnhouse died on November 18, 1929, 64 years old.

His company the “C.L. Barnhouse Company” still exists today.
