Anton Rosenkranz was born in Prague, Bohemia, and received his music education at that city's renowned conservatory. The Prague Conservatory was originally founded and maintained by members of the Bohemian nobility, and many outstanding Austo-Hungarian bandmasters were trained there.
In 1847, Rosenkranz headed the band of the Prague Citizen's Corps. One year later, he was asked to establish the band of the 2nd Styrian Voluntary Rifles. He participated in the campaign of 1848-1849 with this unit, which was discharged following the war. Rosenkranz then assumed command of the band of the 39th Infantry Regiment, "Dom Miguel," at Josephstadt, in 1850. In the 1850s, his regiment was frequently stationed in Vienna, and he had ample opportunities to participate in the city's cultural life. His reputation as one of the most outstanding Czech bandmasters dates from this period. In 1857, he and his regimental band were commended for their outstanding performance at Oldenburg during the annual Emporer's tour. In 1859, he transferred to the 80th Regiment, where he composed the famous Tegetthoff Marsch, the official march of the Austrian Navy. After the war against Prussia in 1866, the regiment's garrison was stationed in Kaschau, where the Italian soldiers of the regiment were discharged and replaced by Galicians. The regiment then moved to Lemberg in 1869, where Rosenkranz composed the 80th Regiment March. As Vienna was a paramount attraction for all military bandmasters, Rosenkranz happily accepted the offer to become Karl Michael Ziehrer's successor with the 76th Regiment in 1878. Unfortunately, the regiment did not stay there long; it participated in the occupation of Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Sarajevo. The famous 76er Regiments Marsch was composed during this time. In 1881, his unit moved to Oldenburg, where he resided until his death on July 29, 1888. Rosenkranz was very popular and was held in high esteem during his lifetime.
